INT. KITCHEN - MORNING

A coffee cup slams down onto a kitchen table in the middle of the room.  FRANCES, a young woman, 24,  paces the large room staring at her feet as she does so.

She stops in front of the expansive window above the sink and stares out over the fields in front of her.  

As she stands watching the grasses in the fields sway in the breeze her hand reaches down into the sink and picks up a knife with a rounded tip.  She starts to run the knife back and forth across the countertop to her right as if cutting it into slices.

She then turns around to lean back against the sink.  She brings the knife to her left palm and runs it back and forth across her skin staring intently at her hand.

Eventually she places the knife on the countertop to her right and sinks to the floor rubbing her left hand as she does so.  Sitting with her knees up to her chin she rests her forehead on her knees and sighs.

Heavy footsteps can be heard entering the kitchen, but Frances doesn't move.

DAVE

I'm outta here.

Frances lifts her head and watches DAVE, a young man in his mid-twenties, walk out of the kitchen.  She sits silently as a door can be heard opening and closing somewhere in the house.

A small smile falls over Frances' lips.
